Breast swelling at time Breastfeeding | Breast Lumps

What causes breast breastfeeding women experience swelling accompanied by pain and fever? Are there things that can be done to prevent and overcome when there was swelling of the breasts while breastfeeding?

Around the third or fourth day after you give birth, often feel fuller breasts, tension, and pain. Such a state is called engorgement (breast swelling) caused by static in venous blood and lymph vessels. This is a sign that the milk becomes much secreted. If in such circumstances to avoid breastfeeding mothers because of the pain and give prelacteal feeding (food additives) in infants, the state actually continues.

Increases breast swelling or full due to the secretion of breast milk continues while the baby is not disusukan so there is no stimulation of the nipples which resulted oxytocin reflex does not occur and the milk is not removed. If this continues, the milk secreted in breast accumulate and cause the areola (black sections encircling the nipple) is more prominent, and flat nipples become more difficult when the baby sucked by disusukan. When you have reached such a state, the skin on the breast will look more shiny red, painful once and the mother had a fever like influenza.

To prevent swollen breasts, some ways are recommended:

  • Feeding baby immediately after birth, if at all possible
  • Feeding baby without scheduled (on demand / baby's content)
  • Remove the milk by hand or pump when production exceeds the needs of infants
  • Perform maintenance regularly postpartum breast
  • Take out a little milk before feeding so flabby breasts, so that the nipple is more easily captured / inhaled by infants
  • Provide a cold compress to reduce breast pain
  • Provide a warm compress before feeding to facilitate the baby suck (capture) nipple
  • Perform sorting (massage) breast to reduce the increase in blood circulation and the static in the blood vessels and lymph vessels in the breast. Mom could do breast massage using coconut or olive oil to improve the flow of milk so smoothly. Stages of Breast massage as follows:
  • Use fingers to massage the breast gently with a direction away from the nipple.
  • Gently massage the breast as if kneading, using lifting and pressing movements.
  • Use hand gently and carefully to breast twist unidirectional and counter-clockwise.
  • Use both hands to gently press the area around the areola to remove fluid milk. Then apply the liquid portion of milk to the nipple.
